Backyard Gardening Workshops

RaisedBed_1_1Oʻahu RC&D has been able to address the topic of food security in our rural communities by providing home gardening workshops to community members interested in starting or improving personal gardens.

So far, we have had two sets of workshops in the rural communities of Kunia in Central Oʻahu and Waialua on the North Shore. Future workshops will take place in other underserved communities.

These workshops are designed as a series and take attendees through the whole process of gardening, from preparing the soil to planting and harvesting. Topics include getting to know your soil, building a raised bed, pest management, raising and using herbs and common vegetables, and more. Special topics include aquaponics, raising chickens, and fruit tree cultivation.

Oʻahu RC&D is pleased to be able to offer these workshops with a generous grant from DuPont Pioneer and partnerships with the University of Hawaiʻi Master Gardener Program, The Green House, USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, and other local gardening experts.
